Reasons why you should stop keeping score

Keeping score in a marriage means mentally tracking who has done more, who made more sacrifices, or who owes whom. While accountability is important, constantly keeping score can slowly damage the relationship. Many women have lost their homes because of this attitude. Couples should know that they’re not competing but rather complementing each other. However, these are the reasons why you should stop keeping score of your husband if you want a healthy and long-lasting marriage.

Stop keeping score of your husband

Here are some reasons to stop keeping score of your husband:

  1. It creates competition instead of partnership.
    • Marriage is a team effort, not a contest to determine who contributes more.
  2. It breeds resentment.
    • Constantly counting mistakes or comparing efforts can make it difficult to appreciate the good in your spouse.
  3. It prevents forgiveness.
    • When every past mistake is kept on record, it’s harder to move forward after conflicts are resolved.
  4. It focuses on faults instead of strengths.
    • Looking only at what your husband didn’t do can cause you to overlook his love, effort, and positive qualities.
  5. It increases conflict.
    • Conversations can turn into debates about who is “right” or who has sacrificed more, rather than solving the problem.
  6. It discourages generosity.
    • Love grows when acts of kindness are given freely, not as deposits expecting an equal return.
  7. It can make your husband feel unappreciated.
    • If every effort is measured against a list of shortcomings, he may feel that nothing he does is enough.
  8. It weakens emotional intimacy.
    • Trust and closeness grow when both spouses feel accepted rather than constantly evaluated.
  9. It shifts the focus from “us” to “me.”
    • Healthy marriages ask, “How can we grow together?” instead of “Who has done more?”
  10. It makes room for grace.
    • Both spouses will have seasons where one gives more than the other due to illness, work, parenting, or other challenges. Extending grace during those times strengthens the marriage.
Stop keeping score of your husband

From a Christian perspective, 1 Corinthians teaches that love “keeps no record of wrongs.” This doesn’t mean ignoring serious issues or accepting harmful behavior. Rather, it encourages a spirit of forgiveness instead of holding every offense against one another.

It’s important to distinguish keeping score from addressing real problems. If your husband is consistently disrespectful, irresponsible, or abusive, those issues should not be ignored in the name of “not keeping score.” Healthy marriages combine grace with honest communication, accountability, and mutual respect.
